Very disturbing indeed.
Actually there is a link – sort of. SF appeals to non-conformists and people who aren’t 100% comfortable with mainstream society. Of course there are 1001 ways to not conform, and most of them are completely harmless, but the police don’t see those people professionally, do they?
Being on the receiving end of bigotry feels horrid, I know, but we do have the option of leaving our books and laptops at home. Spare a thought for the people who can’t leave their skin colour at home when they travel, or go for a job interview, or just pop to the shops.
