I use two techniques. First, if it has a subtly lurid cover of the kind you describe, I'll neither open it nor buy it. Second, If it has an artistically beautiful and SF-nally impressive cover, I'll look at it and read the printed description. If that seems interesting and for real, then I'll in most cases buy it.
